Though stainless steel barrels and actions are the rage these days, they are a risky choice for the still-hunter.You will move your rifle constantly as you maneuver through the woods, and on bright days the flash of metal parts can be seen for 100 yards or more. Even bright-finished blued barrels shine like beacons in the forest. Forget vanity and opt for matte black or camouflage finishes on metal parts if you intend to still-hunt. Every year I see hunters going by with their glittering stainless rifles in hand — they never see me, and I’m sure they bypass a lot of deer as well.

When still-hunting, the wind is a factor only when the prevailing breeze is steady and strong. I have hunted throughout North America and have noticed that, no matter where I am from Idaho to Georgia to Maine, the wind can blow left, right and in circles, at varying speeds and directions with no real pattern a hunter can use. One time I released a bit of thistledown to track the wind. The down nearly touched the ground, swirled high over my head, curled back to about waist high, headed off into the woods in front of me and then came back on an updraft practically into my hand again. There is no way to monitor or thwart the wind in most woodland situations, so the best advice is to head into the prevailing winds (which run southwest to northeast in most of the eastern U. S., for example) and ignore the occasional gust that goes against the grain.Woods, mountains and river valleys create more wind problems, as does night or evening air currents.

You can’t predict where the wind is going or in which direction it will be blowing 100 yards ahead, so don’t waste time thinking about it.

Hunt thick cover — move slowly, look and listen. That’s what deer do when the wind fails them, and that’s all you have to do, too.
